| HISTORY OF THE ITALIAN IMMIGRANT
An extensive and impressive display tracing the history of our district. It follows the early Italian migrants from their homes in the poorer regions of Italy to Australia – where many settled in Ingham. The display outlines many of the hardships they endured and the work they undertook that no Australian was willing to do, in order to give their families a better life. Along the way they helped open up and enrich the lives of all in the north east of Australia.
The majority of the migrants worked in the canefields under very difficult circumstances. It tells the stories of many of our early pioneers, especially the Italians, and how they struggled to fit into the Australian way of life and endure, through hardships and insults. It demonstrates the resilience of the migrants and how they succeeded to own their own piece of land – some of which is now in the hands of 4th generation cane farmers. |
