ABOUT AUSTRALIAN ITALIAN FESTIVAL

History of the Italian Migrant
The first group of Italian migrants arrived in Townsville in 1891 and after having settled in the Ingham district, most sent home for family and friends. The pattern of Italian immigration was now established and to this day, more than half the population of Ingham are of Italian decent.
The majority of the migrants worked in the canefields under very difficult circumstances. – some of which now are in the hands of 4th generation canefarmers.

The cultural history of the Hinchinbrook region for one is unique and rich with stories from the cane cutting days.  The town is known as “Little Italy”.

The Italian Migrants were very hard workers and prospered greatly for their hard work and dedication to their families and heritage.
